Can We Build Healthcare Systems That Truly Work For Everyone?

In this edition of the Expert’s Voice, Marie-Lise Nedee challenges us to reimagine healthcare systems from the ground up.

As a PhD researcher at KU Leuven and volunteer with Medibus Bruxelles, Nedee sees firsthand how even strong healthcare systems leave vulnerable people behind.

“Health systems primarily serve majority populations, forcing others to navigate spaces not built for them,” Nedee explains.

She pushes back against quick fixes, arguing that temporary NGO interventions often become permanent substitutes for real structural change.

Nedee calls for a revolution in how we approach healthcare policy. “Language shapes who deserves care and whose perspectives matter,” she insists. Her research engages policymakers in critical reflection about how seemingly neutral terms carry implicit biases.

Looking ahead, Nedee envisions healthcare systems designed with excluded communities, not just for them. She urges practitioners to “approach every situation with humility” and recognize that people experiencing health issues often know best what they need.

Marie-Lise Nedee empowers us to see healthcare access as a structural responsibility, not an individual burden, creating systems that honor everyone’s dignity and right to care.
