How Can Africa Protect Health Systems from Climate Change?

Climate change is already harming health across Africa, with more disease outbreaks, food shortages, and extreme weather. The Africa CDC’s Climate Change and Health Strategic Framework (2025) outlines a plan to tackle these growing threats.

The report highlights that 56% of Africa’s public health crises since 2001 are linked to climate shifts, worsening diseases like malaria and cholera while straining weak health systems.

The framework identifies five key threats. vector-borne diseases (like malaria), waterborne illnesses, heatwaves, food insecurity, and air pollution. To fight these, it proposes seven strategies, including better leadership, community education, emergency response systems, and funding for climate-proof health infrastructure.

A major focus is on the One Health approach, which connects human, animal, and environmental health to prevent outbreaks.

With a budget of $482 million over five years, the plan aims to strengthen early warning systems, train health workers, and involve communities in adapting to climate risks. The Africa CDC stresses that political commitment and global partnerships are crucial for success.

Africa’s health systems face rising climate threats. The Africa CDC’s plan fights back with better preparedness, funding, and cross-sector teamwork—urging leaders to act now.
